Race is On to Restore Weston-Super-Mare Pier in Time for Summer Season

The famous Weston-super-Mare Grand Pier, which has twice been destroyed by fire, is preparing to re-open for the summer holiday season. It had been hoped that the pier would have been re-opened on 25 June but last minute delays in the rebuilding work have meant that it is now expected to open near the start of the all important summer season. The contractors realise the importance of the pier to Weston-super-Mare’s tourist industry and are said to be working as hard as possible to get the pier ready.

Hotels in Weston-super-Mare are looking forward to the pier being restored to its former glory. Although the showpiece observation tower won’t be completed until 2011, it is expected that the rest of the pier will be ready for the public to use again from the end of July. This means that families visiting this seaside town during the school holidays will be able to enjoy a traditional visit to the pier alongside all the other attractions of Weston-super-Mare.

The rebuilding of the pier has meant that the owners have taken the chance to update its facilities and it will now include an indoor theme park with 14 major rides including the obligatory ghost train.

In a bid to make Weston-super-Mare an all year round destination, the pier’s owners are including modern conference facilities and a grand hall. The hall will stage concerts for up to 3,000 people, banquets for up to 1,000 people and it is planned that it will also be host to weddings.

Peter Morgan of Beverley Guest House says “The Pier will be amazing when it is finished and will be a lot bigger than the old pier, the attractions inside are going to be superb, with the enhancement of the prom it is going to bring a lot of interest to the town and as guest houses, we hope the visitors will stay longer.”
